ABOUT ROBERT MICHAEL:
I (Robert Michael) personally mine for gem crystals mainly in Colorado but also in other western States. It’s typically old fashion hard rock mining using a large hammer and chisels and digging rather large holes to follow a seam in the rock. Lots of research is required in order to find locations that will have a fairly high probability of producing the specific type of gem crystals being sought. Even with the research, I find quality material less than half the time. I find high gem-quality material only about 15% of the time. As a rule, we must fill every hole we dig.

I facet (cut) crystals that have a clean interior. This is typically called “gemmy” material, but I will only cut the portion of a crystal that has absolutely no inclusions. This means that even though the outside of a crystal may be scratched or broken, the inside of the crystal must be perfectly clear without any foreign material or imperfections.
