Ford's Latest F-150 Continues to Hold Its Own in the Truck Market
Ford unleashed its latest iteration of the F-150 and to nobody's surprise, it was an absolute hit. While on the outside it may not appear starkly different from previous versions, the 2021 F-150 made some unique additions. The new F-150 has a slightly wider track and larger available wheels - up to 22" - and the tailgate features C-clamp slots, tie-down cleats, a tablet holder, and even bottle openers. To say that this is a working man's truck would be an understatement.
What really stands out in the 2021 F-150 is its available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain, making it the first full hybrid U.S. pickup. The system integrates a single 35-kilowatt electric motor into the transmission housing backed by a liquid-cooled, 1.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack. This is a self-contained, self-charging system that incorporates a belt-driven starter. PowerBoost will be available in all trims, in both two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations. Another innovative feature is the Pro Power Onboard, an in-bed power source designed to replace generators at job sites and campsites, as well as large screens displaying the next-gen Sync 4 infotainment system.
The new F-150's newest - and most clever - feature is hands-down its available stowable gearshift lever. The electronic shifter folds down and into the center console to expand the center armrest into a flat work surface that can hold a 15" laptop when the vehicle is in park. Other available driver and passenger comforts include Max Recline seats that fold nearly flat, an ample-sized panoramic moonroof, an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed audio system with SiriusXM 360L, plus a full-width lockable storage box that lives underneath the rear seat and can fold flat when not in use.
For driver assistance, the 2021 F-150 includes Ford's CoPilot 360 2.0 suite which includes pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, and headlamps with auto on/off and automatic high beams. XLT models get lane-keep assist, along with reverse sensors and new safeguards like reverse brake-assist and a post-impact braking feature. A comprehensive self-park system is also available which is perfect for those snug city-parking situations.
While we all can agree the Ford F-150 has been a fan-favorite for years, what makes the F-Series line of trucks truly special is what it has done for the U.S. economy. These trucks support almost half a million jobs and contribute $49 billion annually to U.S. gross domestic product. As America's top-selling vehicles, the F-Series trucks work hard to get the people of the United States moving - in more ways than one.
